Sir, - I agree with L. Jackson's letter (June 8th) on RTE and the derisory format of its news for the deaf. Irish sign language is the third official language of this country, yet, consistently the national broadcaster ignores this as is evidenced by the lack of simultaneous signing in all regular news and current affairs programmes.
Deaf culture is a vibrant and authentic part of Irish life and the ignorance portrayed by its lack of recognition on mainstream television violates not only indigenous linguistic rights but also, I believe, civil rights. If Ireland is to become a truly intercultural society the national broadcaster should start the long overdue process of recognising Irish sign language.
I suggest that such provisions could be sponsored by any one of the mobile phone companies as the use of text messaging by those with a hearing impairment continues to grow. Text messaging is the first technology which did not have to be adapted to the needs of those with a hearing impairment. Isn't it time that RTE took note? - Yours, etc.,
