Madam, - I was delighted to read in your motoring supplement about the 14 new covert Garda patrol vehicles. I hope that the Garda plans to use these cars to address the blight of drivers who insist on driving below the speed limit while refusing to give way to faster drivers.
The rules of the road require drivers to pull in to allow faster drivers overtake, whether on a single carriageway, a dual-carriageway, a motorway or a dirt track, as long as it is safe to do so. The law doesn't permit these drivers to implement their own speed limits, or to actively control the speed of others. It is the worst of reverse aggression to behave in this way, and control of speed is a role for the Garda, not Joe or Joan Public.
These road-hogs cause traffic jams all over the country, and must be a contributory factor to many accidents.Without a doubt such people are dangerous drivers. - Yours, etc,
CORMAC MacGOWAN, Delgany, Co Wicklow.
