Sir, - As someone who cycled for years many moons ago, I support cycle lanes. But their current usage begs a question. What is the point of the Government spending multi-millions on cycle lanes (an admirable decision) if they are not used by all cyclists?
The whole idea was to make space for cyclists, make cycling safer for them and also improve traffic flow for motorists. The reality is that a large number of cyclists do not use these lanes. The Stillorgan Road is a prime example every morning. I firmly believe that if we are to get full benefits from these cycle lanes it should be a legal requirement for cyclists to use them, where provided. -Yours, etc., Eamon O'Brien,
