Madam, – Leo Varadkar’s announcement that Government funding for Galway airport is to be cut, effectively precipitating its closure (Home News, June 8th), is justified by his reasoning that Shannon and Knock are just over an hour’s travel from Galway.

This travel time will come as a surprise to most Galwegians. Consistent government failure to invest in infrastructure in the western region and in particular the Atlantic road corridor means that these times are simply a fantasy. Traffic congestion in Galway city, Claregalway and Tuam, (none of which are yet bypassed), will take an hour to negotiate in itself, leaving over half the journey to Knock remaining on a substandard road.

Perhaps Mr Varadkar knows a better route than the N17? – Yours, etc,

KEITH MITCHELL,

Ardacong,

Tuam, Co Galway.
