Madam, - Niall Vallely (November 14th) defends the right of southern shoppers to ignore their supposedly "patriotic" duty and cross the Border to do their shopping. As he points out, you can buy items such as Irish butter, cheese and whiskey more cheaply in Newry than in the Republic.

May I add that you can also get The Irish Times for only £1? It usually comes with such pleasantries as a "hello" and a "thank you" from the retailers, rarely encountered today when shopping in the south. - Yours, etc,
