A chara, - I noted with great interest in "An Irishman's Diary" (March 18th) that the National Museum will he relocated in Collins Barracks. The article mentions the executions and mass burial of 1798 men in the Croppies' Hole nearby. Having learned of the relocation some time ago, I inquired what would he done about these graves, which include the last resting places of Mathew Tone, Theohald Wolfe Tone's brother, and Bartholomew Teeling.
My information was that the property had been handed over to Dublin Corporation. On contacting the Parks Section of the Corporation, I was told that this was the first they knew that they were now the owners of this historic plot.
I trust, as we will soon be commemorating the bicentenary of the 1798 Rising, that a dignified memorial will be erected on this hallowed spot. At least, soldiers will no longer use it as a soccer pitch. The citizens of Dublin will hardly "stand idly by" and allow this ground, which has a historic significance comparable to Bodenstown, to be used for financial gain by commercial interests. - Is mise,
