Sir, - I am writing to praise the stand taken by Proinsias De Rossa on the current NATO bombardment, in his excellent article (Opinion, March 30th) and in more recent statements. What is most impressive is to see a front-rank politician not only clear about what he condemns, but also robustly asserting the need for an alternative policy grounded in United Nations authority.
His statements hold out the exciting prospect of a really positive redefinition, rather than a spin-doctored abandonment, of our traditional neutrality. As neither a member nor ex-member of Labour or DL, I fervently hope that the new Labour Party will sustain and amplify this perspective, particularly in the European Union context. - Yours, etc., John Maguire,
