Creating jobs, losing jobs

Madam, – So we now have a new Government committed to creating jobs (this was part of its election manifesto). How do the employees of AIB feel about how they have benefited since the new Government came to power in light of the announcement to reduce their numbers by 2,000? I am not suggesting people should be retained in work if there is no work for them. But how ironic that the State as the major shareholder is in the process of putting more people on the dole irrespective of the fact that those same people will have to pay for the bailout.

The Government may try to relinquish its responsibility, as Brendan Howlin has stated that it won’t micromanage AIB. This is surely an abdication of responsibility; it seems to have no problem when it comes to appointing party members to State boards. Is this as creative as it’s going to get in bringing hope to the unemployed? – Yours, etc,
