Sir, - Preserve us from jams! A fortnight ago I wrote to a contemporary journal suggesting that the Liffey should be covered from Kingsbridge to Butt Bridge as a means of easing traffic congestion in the city, and I expected the work to be well underway by now. What a hope. The river can look fine at times, with sunlight or sundown at high water, but, generally, Anna Livia's faeces could stop a clock.

A broad, treelined thoroughfare; would be a marvellous amenity, allowing bachelors to walk over at will and leaving the quays free or merchants, customers and cars. A "Pro Liffey" group would probably try to stop the tide of progress and stage protest walks on the water, in wellingtons, but their voice may be easily drowned out.

I would also recommend consigning statues to cemeteries where they rightly belong, and building a few more toilets these to be run on a commercial basis by and for private business. Humans are more important than seagulls. - Yours, etc.,

Bird Avenue,
