Sir, - This latest statement from Cardinal Connell beggars belief. How dare he insult Archbishop Walton Empey in such a personal manner. As for his petulant remarks about Archbishop Caird at Trinity, downright pathetic. It is, however, hardly surprising following his unChristian pronouncements in the past.
I write this with memories of hurt inflicted by the Catholic Church as a result of being in a mixed marriage. Before the marriage took place, I was told we were "giving scandal" but that we would be given a dispensation as my husband-to-be had been very ill and probably would not have long to live. That was 45 years ago. Plus τa change . . .
Surely there are more pressing problems in Dublin to which Cardinal Connell could attend rather than issuing hurtful, patronising and unChristian remarks from his ivory tower in Drumcondra. - Yours, etc.,
Sally O'Donovan, Howth, Co Dublin.
