A chara, - Community Games applauds the coverage which your newspaper devoted to the world-class achievement of the champion athlete Emily Maher, who fully deserves the praise heaped upon her for her splendid triumph at Moscow.
We would, however, like to point out that the "situation at community level" is not quite as "bleak" as your Editorial (July 17th) suggests.
Emily won her first gold medal at the Community Games National Finals at Mosney, when she was just seven years of age. She won three further gold medals, a silver medal and two bronze medals at successive Community Games National Finals over the course of the past few years.
Ireland can now take great pride in Emily's achievement which ranks with the exploits of all our major sporting stars, many of whom first stood on the winner's podium as representatives of their areas and counties at Community Games events. This year's Credit Union Community Games National Finals, taking place next month at Mosney, are likely to produce more world-class champions and we wish all our competitors, both past and present the very best of success. - Is mise, Martina Mulhall, Public Relations Officer, Community Games,
