Sir, - I take issue with J. Brian Walsh and his assessment of the erection of decorative gates at the bottom of North Great George's Street (March 24th).

I agree it was a planned street that has been open to the public for over 200 years. However, I doubt that the shattered glass of a parked (now stolen) car was part of the vista for street users over those two centuries.

I have lived on this beautiful street for over five years, and very few emergency services vehicles use it. In my experience they use Hill Street in preference, as there is much less traffic and straight access through to Temple Street and the Mater hospitals.

Finally, if Mr Walsh wants to play the history card, there were gates originally on the proposed spot for the new ones, when the street was the driveway of a local manor house, Mount Eccles. - Yours, etc.,
