Madam, – We read with sadness that Eagles Flying in Co Sligo has been criticised by the Born Free Foundation (Home News, February 3rd). As the parents of boys of seven- and five-year-old boys, and three-year-old twin girls, we have visited Eagles Flying on two occasions in the past two years. We have enthusiastically recommended the centre to friends and family.
Our children thoroughly enjoyed the visits, which awakened in them significant interest in the birds, and in wildlife in general. Why? Precisely for the reason the centre was criticised. The animals were in close proximity – very strictly supervised by a superbly professional and knowledgable staff, I hasten to add. It was clear from the outset that animal welfare was at the heart of the centre's raison d'être. Why? Because visitors are required to walk from remote parking to avoid stressing the birds. Life is not risk- free. We will hurry back just in case PC prevails. – Yours, etc,
