Sir, - Mary Holland's judgment is sometimes clouded by her exaggerated respect for people in power, but never more so than when she praises President Clinton for showing "the necessary vision ... to try and prevent a slide towards war in the Middle East" (October 3rd).
The truth is that the Clinton Government must bear a large share of responsibility for the on going bloodshed in that area. Not alone has it not acted as an "honest broker" in the so called peace process, but its unqualified support for its Israeli client has enabled successive Israeli Governments to flout with impunity UN Resolutions 242 and 425 and the Fourth Geneva Convention, not only refusing to budge from occupied territories but continuing an illegal policy of building massive settlements with US taxpayers' money.
No doubt even the recent failed White House summit will be exploited by Clinton for electoral purposes; but let's at least desist from campaigning on his behalf on this side of the Atlantic. - Yours, etc.,
