Madam, – On Saturday week, I walked to Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council’s recycling facility at Eden Park, with two bags of home recorded audio and video cassettes (I apologise to younger readers who might not be familiar with these terms).
The council employee in charge apologetically told me there was no receptacle for these items and suggested that I contact Dublin Waste, the waste management partners for the four Dublin local authorities.
On Wednesday I telephoned Dublin Waste and someone kindly told me that there is only one facility in Dublin for recycling these tapes: Ballymount Road, Walkinstown. I now need to know, while considering my carbon footprint; would it be more environmentally friendly for me to drive to Walkinstown, or should I take the bus? In view of DLRCOCO’s sad example on this issue, it occurred to me that I could probably get away with chucking the tapes behind a bush in the People’s Park.
In frustration I e-mailed Minister of State Ciarán Cuffe, who has assured me that he will be writing to DLRCOCO’s waste water department to obtain clarification on the matter.
Publishing my letter could possibly expedite this matter and in the process save the Department of Transport the cost of a stamp. That would be a tangible result. – Yours, etc,
