Sir, - According to your report (June 14th), there is an average of 22 pupils per class in our primary school system, compared to an OECD average of 18. Unfortunately, it would appear that nobody has informed the Department of Education of this, as the department in its wisdom has decreed that St Patrick's National School in Skerries should lose a teacher next September. As a result, our son will spend his next school year in a class of 37 pupils - more than double the OECD average.
I was going to ask if this was a record, but, sadly, I doubt that it even comes close. - Yours, etc.,
Martin Loughnan, Skerries, Co Dublin.
