Sir, - Fintan O'Toole (Opinion, October 1st) sums up the class divisions in Irish society in the 1990s, saying: "If you came from the lower classes you could go to jail for stealing a handbag. If you came from the respectable middle classes and you committed your crimes through bankers and accountants, you had as much chance of going to jail as your Persian cat had of winning the dog show."

Over a hundred years ago a prominent Victorian penned a similar sentiment: "They imprison the man who stole the goose from the common but let the greater evil loose who stole the common from the goose." - Yours, etc.,
