Sir, - I note that the ESB is coming in for some criticism for not compensating its customers for power shortages over the Christmas period whilst NIE is offering its customers compensation.
It is worth pointing out that NIE is obliged to do so, and this requirement was put in place to safeguard consumer interests as NIE is a private body which is more profit motivated than a public service equivalent such as the ESB. The ESB should be commended for the sterling work its crews have carried out over the past two stormy Christmases, keeping many Irish turkeys warm.
It's a pity Telecom Eireann could not follow its public spirited cousin and get crews out as opposed to waiting until well after Christmas before taking action. - Yours, etc., Cian De Buitleir,
Oakley Grove, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
