Sir, - Well done to Emer O'Connor (January 8th) for highlighting the problems of TV and children. Protecting children from the trash on TV is extremely difficult. A homework assignment given to my 11-year-old recently was to write about a favourite TV soap. Those suggested included Eastenders, Coronation Street, Fair City, Emmerdale, Friends, etc. Hardly suitable for primary school children, yet the majority are allowed to view these programmes. The 30 minutes of peace they buy seems to outweigh any moral objections about content or suitability.
It adds to parents' difficulties when films rated "Over-12s" are shown at an early hour, e.g. Titanic, at 5 p.m. on Christmas Day. - Yours, etc.,
