Madam, - It is shocking to hear a senior trade unionist advocate a deliberate curb on economic growth. Mr David Begg of ICTU says current levels will require the importation of more Eastern European labour. Though he doesn't say this, the problem with Eastern European labour is that it is cheaper than the domestic sort. Mr Begg does not like competitive pressures that bring wages down.

By coincidence you publish Kathy Sheridan's wonderful account (July 21st) of a cruiser trip from Belturbet to Carrick-on-Shannon. A recurring theme is the high cost of everything. Visitors to Ireland love the experience - the river, the people - but are horrified at how much they must pay to enjoy it.
