Sir, - Evidence in the form of letters to The Irish Times, radio commentary/satire and pub talk prove that Ireland remains a country populated by "knockers".
The recent J.P. McManus Invitational Pro-Am Golf Classic at Limerick Golf Club was a resounding success, raising over £11 million for the disadvantaged in our society. Yet, due to a warped logic, bitterness rears its ugly head again as the Pro-Am is seen as nothing more than a playground for the rich. Sure, teams had to pay £40,000 pounds to compete, but this and all other money made went to charity.
What is so wrong with successful people giving money to charity, and why is J.P. McManus, who came from humble beginnings to become not only a very successful businessman but a philanthropist, being derided by many? Can anyone answer? - Yours, etc.,
Stephen O'Dowd, Pembroke Road, Dublin 4.
