Charging third-level fees

A chara, – Given that everything is supposedly on the table for possible cutting or taxing in the next budget, perhaps it is time for student representative groups to finally back down on their nonsensical and counterproductive opposition to the reintroduction of third-level fees in any guise?

Given that the Green Party is refusing to back the return of fees, it now appears likely that the registration fee will have to be raised to about €3,000 for every student in the country, regardless of means. This means more students will need to qualify for a grant or else find themselves shut out of third- level education. At the same time, however, the grants budget is also likely to be cut.

Surely even the students can now see that levying third-level fees on those from more affluent backgrounds is a much more equitable and progressive way to raise the required funds? If not, might I propose a simple, foolproof means-test that could not be evaded and would not deny anyone access to third level education: those who attended private secondary schools and grind schools are charged full third-level fees. Everyone else goes for free. If there are families who can afford a private secondary education or third- level fees but not both, then let their children attend public schools like the rest of us. – Is mise,
