Sir, - Regarding the article by John Madden in The Irish Times on August 19th, we believe that a very restrictive viewpoint was presented on the efficacy of the various fibre sources and their role in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.
Dr. Mike Hill, chairman of the European Cancer Prevention Organisation, has recently reviewed the current literature on fibre and cancer, totalling more than 50 research papers. The outcome is that most studies on wheat bran have shown a reduced risk of cancer, and there is substantial evidence that those who eat diets rich in cereal fibre have a lower tendency to develop colorectal cancer.
Incidentally, dietary fibre, and specifically wheat bran, has many other benefits when eaten as part of a health diet. This message was not communicated in your article, and an opportunity was lost to get an important and consistent diet and health message to your readers. - Yours, etc.,
