A Chara, - As the examination season swings into full gear may I take this opportunity to call on the Department of Education and Science to reiterate its 1995 commitment to release Junior Cert results on a Tuesday.
As the ASTI president involved at the time, I am now moved to raise this issue following a number of recent queries from school principals concerned about the planned 1999 release date.
The original decision arose from our shared concerns about teenage drinking and our desire to uncouple the inevitable examination euphoria from the more adult-orientated entertainment that occurs closer to the weekend.
May I also suggest that posting the Junior Cert results to the student's own homes may encourage parents to take a more central role in determining the nature, appropriateness and timing of the day's celebrations. - Yours, etc.,
