Causes of homelessness

Madam, - I refer to your editorial and Focus Ireland's report on homelessness (July 24th). Focus Ireland and the other agencies involved in the crisis in homelessness are doing good work against a rising tide, and with not enough help from the Government.

I would like to expand the term homelessness. Homelessness is not just houselessness, it can be a state of mind for many and they may feel trapped in their predicament. Many homeless people need to be educated and supported if they are to make an address a home. Otherwise we are just "painting over the cracks in society". Allocating a permanent structure with a roof to many homeless people may not be enough.

Recently I spoke with a middle-aged man who is a street liver (homeless) for years. He proudly showed me the keys of a corporation flat he was recently allocated. "I haven't moved in yet," he commented with a smile.

This man continues to live on the streets. It's familiar to him. Street living has become part of who he is. He does not know how to move into his new flat, neither does he know how to live under a permanent roof. What may appear simple to most, like utility bills, refuse collection etc., are alien to this man. The streets provide him with an understandable sense of belonging. Trying to locate a place to rest his head at night may be his only purpose to any day. He might feel isolated in a permanent address.

This is just one of the many and varied states of homelessness, so prevalent today. Homeless and houseless people need more help than just being allocated a permanent roof. Sure it's a start. But we need to look beyond four walls and a roof, and try and enter into the hearts and minds of our homeless. It could be you or me tomorrow. - Yours etc.,
