Cathedral Charges

Sir, - Six months ago I started working in the city centre. My upset at leaving my old workplace in the lovely Liffey Valley was lessened by the prospect of exploring the historic heart of Dublin.

As an alternative to visiting the shops at lunchtime I decided that some days I would enjoy quiet time in the local churches. I was particularly looking forward to spending a few moments in the magnificence of St Patrick's and Christ Church cathedrals. I was soon to discover that this would not be feasible as I was greeted by signs requesting £2 admission.

I acknowledge that the upkeep of the buildings is very high, yet those living and working locally are prohibited from using what are first and foremost places of worship, and secondly tourist attractions. I welcome Dean McCarthy's acknowledgement of the difficulty caused by these charges (Interview, November 25th). - Yours, etc.,
