Sir, - Your report on the proposal to charge cars for access to Dublin city centre (The Irish Times, June 1st) quotes Mr Edgar Morgenroth as saying that public transport in Dublin is "seen as impractical, expensive or unreliable".
While I agree it is often all of the above, may I suggest that it is also seen as unfashionable - particularly by those in more senior executive positions.
Whether or not they live on a practical, inexpensive and reliable public transport route, the vast majority of typical senior business people will take their cars to work. It is not only a comfortable and convenient form of transport, but also a status symbol, clearly setting them apart from the office juniors squashed onto the bus.
In New York, Tokyo, London and almost every other major city, business men and women, suits, briefcases and all, take their places on the public transport system. If we could form the same attitudes here, perhaps there would be more road space and money to work on bringing the transport system up to the standards required. - Yours, etc.,
K. Murphy, Dublin 2.
