Madam, - So much for the emergence of the "Caring Coalition" of Fine Gael, Labour and the Green Party. Enda Kenny cares so much about his prospective coalition partners that he has decided to back President McAleese's campaign for re-election rather than supporting Eamon Ryan of the Greens. Mr Kenny can delude himself into thinking President McAleese is truly non-party if he wishes, but Fianna Fáil is proud to have nominated her in 1997 and will support her again this time.
Fine Gael, Labour and the Greens - a cohesive and credible alternative to the current Government? I don't think so. If they can't agree on a candidate to run for the presidency, what chance have they of surviving the inevitable pressures of being in Government together? - Yours, etc.,
Cllr MICHAEL McGRATH, Dún Eoin, Carrigaline, Co Cork.
Madam, - I suggest that Mary McAleese has already been re-elected by public acclaim. - Yours, etc.,
EANNA O'KELLY, Barnageera, Skerries, Co. Dublin.
