Sir, - Some interesting theological and sociological questions have been raised about "Cardinal Hume and Embryos" (August 21st). I believe the following points need to be made in this debate.
First, a human embryo is a human being with potential, not a potential human being. We all started life as human embryos. The faith, if any, of the parents. or "would be" parents, of the destroyed embryos is unknown. Therefore, baptism could not be given. Baptism is a sacrament of faith.
Second, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: "As regards children who have died without baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God" and "hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without baptism" (page 285, No. 1261).
Thirdly, I know Masses have been said for the embryos. Finally, the Society for the Protection of Unborn children in Northern Ireland has called on Parliament to outlaw this outrageous practice. This massacre of the innocent must never happen again in a civilised society.
Yours. etc.,
