Sir, - I read with amazement the attempt by Mr John Kearney in today's Irish Times (January 11th) to bring the Young Scientists' Exhibition and, more particularly, one of its young exhibitors into this puerile (or perhaps "Pure Isle") debate.
As a past pupil of Terenure College, I received a balanced education, devoid of either political or religious bigotry. I would encourage the pupil concerned and his mentors not to be influenced by such outdated and irrelevant criticism, and I would congratulate them on their fine entry.
As members of the European Union, from which we derive much of our economic and social affluence, this entire argument should be left where it belongs - firmly in the past. To quote Mr Kearney: "Will we ever grow up"!
Yours, etc.,
