Sir, - With regard to the recent letters to this column on road safety, I want to support Douglas McCowen's plea (October 26th) for Garda surveillance of dangerous driving and the imposition of on the spot fines. I could honestly say that over the past five years, despite the advent of new motorways, I have never seen a Garda presence on the main roads out of Dublin.

It is obvious, when one is travelling at the upper end of the speed limit, that some of those overtaking are reaching speeds of 100 miles an hour. They hassle for the outside lane when it may be impossible to move over.

The Gardai have successfully mounted intensive campaigns against drunken driving, but our roads need policing all the year round. Let us not wait for some major disaster to galvanise us into action. The number of fatal accidents, as shown in the latest statistics, is disaster enough. - Yours, etc.,

Wellington Road,
