Madam, – I was 18 and preparing for my Leaving Cert in the Convent in Buncrana when the dreadful  news of the atrocity just down the road was relayed to us by the Mother Superior. I remember watching the steady stream of cars edge across the border from Derry into the safety of our  Donegal village.

We felt both helpless and scared. So much and yet so little has changed in the past 38 years. My two children are now sitting their Leaving Cert exams and still the truth of why Bloody Sunday happened remains locked away,  hopefully not for much longer.

For the families of the victims the pain is as raw as it was on that black, bleak day. Having worked as a journalist in Derry for more than 20 years I have got  to know many of the relatives.  They have waited  with courage and dignity for  a very long time for justice for their loved ones. Let’s hope the Saville findings will help bring some closure for all of them. – Yours, etc,
