Sir, Kevin Myers, in his column, recently touched on the continuing campaign for a review of the Widgery Tribunal enquiry into the events of Bloody Sunday. In Northern Ireland, where just about everything has a political significance, it is hardly surprising that the Bloody Sunday Justice campaign and the Bloody Sunday Trust haven attracted the support of some political parties.
The real point, however, is that the relatives of those killed and injured in the Bogside on Bloody Sunday still deserve justice, regardless of what else has happened in Northern Ireland in the past 25 years. I was in Derry in the immediate aftermath of Bloody Sunday, 25 years ago, and the hurt and sense of injustice felt by the ordinary nationalist people, compounded by the findings of a manifestly inadequate tribunal, were very real.
Those feelings are still very apparent in Derry. The continuing revelations about the events of that day must inevitably result, sooner or later, in a complete reversal of the findings of the tribunal. - Yours, etc
