Madam, – A couple of things caught my eye in Sinead O’Connor’s letter (March 4th). First, she refers to Jesus Christ merely as the “man”. Next she says “If Christ were here . . .”. But our Lord promised, “I am with you always”. – Yours, etc,
Madam, – I cannot see why the faithful should not obey the good Bishop of Ferns’s suggestion to contribute to the cost of the child abuse scandal.
After all, these are the same faithful who for decades fawned on the bishops and their priests, ensured that they were above both law and justice, and blindly followed their cruel precepts regardless of the injustice to others. They did not need to remain in the Roman Catholic Church: if they needed spiritual sustenance then there were other religions around which might even have given them a few sorely needed ethical principles.
They contributed in a very real way to the present crisis. Why should they not now contribute to the aftermath? – Yours, etc,
