Sir, - But . . . who begat the Celtic Tiger? To whom should we credit the birth and breeding of this ubiquitous cat? After a good deal of idle thought, my suggestions are as follows:
Parentage: Charles J. Haughey and Dermot Desmond. C.J. for the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Temple Bar, Government Buildings, etc., combined with national pride (almost arrogance) and cando attitude (also almost arrogance). Desmond for the concept and creation of the IFSC. Plus pride and attitude (as above).
Midwife: Padraig O hUiginn, who, as Secretary of the Department of the Taoiseach, facilitated the birth. Nurturer: Michael D. Higgins, who impressed upon the cub the importance of culture, art and the environment.
Is there one who would disagree with this assessment of the fabulous feline's lineage? - Yours, etc.,
Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
