A chara, - I am writing with regard to a letter written by my colleagues, Sean McDonagh and Niamh Gaynor, published on May 23rd, entitled "Biopatenting Directive", which was a response to your editorial of May 14th.Unfortunately the published letter was edited and was thus inaccurate. A key sentence and phrase were deleted from what was originally paragraph two.The published version reads "This directive sanctions the theft of life forms. Sadly all the Irish MEPs with the exception of Ms Malone, Ms Ahern and Ms McKenna, voted against this whilst Ms Banotti did not vote at all."The original reads "This Directive sanctions the theft of life forms. An amendment was tabled to protect against such biopiracy. Sadly all the Irish MEPs with the exception of Ms Malone, Ms Ahern, and Ms McKenna voted against this amendment whilst Ms Banotti did not vote at all".Ms Banotti did vote on many of the amendments to the Directive and thus the above sentence as published is inaccurate. Our letter referred very specifically to one amendment. - Yours, etc., Iva Pocock,Voice,Upper Pembroke Street,Dublin 2.
