Sir, - What a tragic response by Mr John Donnelly, the IFA president, to the ports blockade by Welsh farmers: "Bring in the police".
It is not very long since the IFA erected its own blockades in Kildare Street and Killarney and took great offence when requested to move aside.
As an Irish beef producer, I can totally sympathise with the Welsh farmers and I understand many of their frustrations and anxieties.
Beef producers are in dire straits in both the UK and Ireland. What is needed is a total reappraisal of the marketing and EU supports which up to now have failed miserably to give beef producers a reasonable return for their efforts. - Yours, etc.,
