Sir, - Everyone including Robert O'Sullivan (May 25th), is entitled to his/her view of what is a "beautiful rendition" of any song. Raglan Road is a song about a man's love for a woman and for a proper, meaningful rendition the song should be sung by a man. The Snowy breasted Pearl should likewise be sung by a man. And while on the subject of propriety in these matters, the Shepherd's Song from Songs of the Auvergne should be sung by a boy and not by a woman the timbre of whose voice is quite different and inappropriate. - Yours, etc.
Howth Road,
Dublin 3.
