Sir, - The entry of the Bank of Scotland into the Irish mortgage lending market has highlighted the extent to which the indigenous lending institutions have exploited their position here. Proof positive, if proof was needed, that competition means lower prices for the consumer.

The Tanaiste, Ms Harney, has promised the deregulation of licensed premises here to allow free and unfettered competition within the trade. She also promised the deregulation of the taxi industry. When does she intend to turn these promises into practice and give us consumers a better and cheaper service which fair competition will surely bring? - Yours, etc.,
