Sir, – Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald is reported to be considering a ban on all slapping of children (Home News, December 28th).
This would make some token amends to those same children and their generation who might have hoped for better than their parents in their quality of life: in education, freedoms, justice, cultural, religious, political affairs, and living standards, and options to live in Ireland.
All of these have diminished in a short time. We need to re-invent ourselves (re-discover our real selves?) to fix things. A slapping ban – although not in the timid time-frame now being considered – would make a contribution. – Yours, etc,
