Sir, - It was with some surprise last week while shopping that I noticed smoked trout being marketed and sold as Atlantic sea trout. Taken on face value, this would suggest that all is well with native sea trout stocks in Ireland at present. This of course is not true, as they have been decimated on the west coast over the past eight years.People may believe that if they can buy what is branded by producers as sea trout, there is no problem with wild sea trout stocks. Of course, what they are buying are rainbow trout that are grown out at sea in cages. This is very different to the native, wild sea trout that run the rivers of Ireland from early summer to late summer. This misdescription should be acted on by the present Government so that the public is aware of the crisis facing native wild seatrout stocks in the west of Ireland today. - Yours, etc.,Charles H. E. Butler,Dun Laoghaire,Co Dublin.
