Sir, - I note the opposition of residents of the Co Clare village of Corofin to plans to house 20 asylum-seekers in the local hostel. (The Irish Times, April 27th). The chairwoman of the Corofin Development Association cites, among local concerns, the question of medical screening, and the fact that the asylum-seekers' backgrounds are unknown. I wonder how many of the tourists visiting the Burren and staying at the hostel in previous years were vetted on this basis?
Since many asylum-seekers have fled their homelands to avoid persecution on grounds of race or nationality, I wonder if housing them in Corofin would be a case of "out of the frying pan, into the fire". - Yours, etc.,
Sinead Donlon, Beatty Park, Celbridge, Co Kildare.
