Sir, - The credibility of opinions expressed about conservation and, where necessary, restoration of Asgard by your John Gore-Grimes and Ted Crosbie (December 28th) and by John Kearon (January 10th) can be assessed very quickly by visiting Kilmainham Jail and considering whether the vessel as presented over the past 20 years has served the national interest. This is not to criticise the National Museum authorities but rather to challenge the hurlers on the ditch who have not participated in the effort to find a better role for Asgard in the life of the nation. Perhaps the restorers could now be given a chance to show what commitment can achieve.
Only after the most exhaustive inquiry over nearly six years have the relevant authorities - the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands and the Department of Defence - determined that Asgard's future as a national symbol can be ensured only as a living reality in its natural element.
Your correspondents - one of whom, Mr Kearon, was deeply involved in most stages of this process - ought to respect that fact and perhaps support the ongoing effort to bring the project to completion. - Yours, etc.,
M. Prior, Honorary Secretary, Ath-Choiriu an Asgard Teo.
