Sir, - The Irish Times is to be congratulated on its coverage of the demolition of Archer's Garage, including the clear identification of the developer, architect and demolition firm involved. However, it can be assumed that a similar scenario could unfold on any future bank holiday unless appropriate action is taken. Part of this should be by the corporation, which might well take as its model the energy and enthusiasm of its own recently invigorated traffic management department.
It is the clear responsibility of the corporation to make available an official with: 1, the ability to determine within minutes the listed status of any building; 2, the ability to obtain an injunction to prevent further damage to such a listed building; and 3, rapid access to whatever law enforcement agencies are necessary to enforce this. The means of contacting such a person should be appropriately advertised to enable any interested person or group to bring such actions to his or her attention. The Corporation cannot continue with its current policy of assuming that developers, demolishers and fire-setters knock off at five o'clock. - Yours, etc.,
Eoghan Elliott Mooney, Willow Lodge, Raglan Lane, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
