Sir, - Surely it must be a huge indictment of the mentality of the thinking of the citizens of the Republic that anyone there could describe an Irish politician, of whatever hue, merely as "a member of parliament of another country" (Noreen P. Whelan, August 23rd).
On that basis neither Daniel O'Connell nor Charles Stewart Parnell would have qualified for the office of President of Ireland, had the office existed then. - Yours, etc., (Dr) PAUL O'DOHERTY,
Berlin.
