Sir, - All my life, I have been a supporter of free enterprise - and for that reason my sympathies are with those opposed to global capitalism, for this is destroying the very free enterprise which it purports to protect.
The capitalist system, which came into being to enable small businesses to raise capital by the creation of public joint stock companies, has been usurped by vast conglomerates and multinationals whose predatory takeover of smaller companies is destroying free enterprise, to the detriment of the small capitalist, the consumer and, in the long term, the security of workers.
Such globalisation creates not liberalisation but a system akin to communism, with the exception that wealth is in the hands of a few rather than - theoretically at least - the many. - Yours, etc.,
Geoffrey Robinson, Cullenswood, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.
