Madam, - I was glad to see the Irishman's Diary of August 4th on the foundation of the Irish Republican Brotherhood in 1858. While Brendan Ó Cathaoir is quite right to note that the anniversary has not attracted a great deal of public attention, there was a successful conference in Belfast a short while ago organised by Queen's University and the University of Ulster. A resulting volume of essays will be published next year.
In November this year History Irelandwill publish a special issue on the Fenians.
My own book, The Fenian Ideal and Irish Nationalism, 1882-1916, extensively drawn on in Brendan Ó Cathaoir's piece, will be available in paperback later this month. - Yours, etc,
MATT KELLY,
