Madam, - Tony Kinsella (October 21st) should not get to carried away with the virtues of a Barack Obama victory.
Obama wants to escalate the war in Afghanistan and will want EU states including Ireland (that has 12 or so there already) to send more troops to help out. In fact, as Mr Kinsella well knows, not only are virtually all EU states in Nato, a nuclear armed military alliance dominated by the US and committed to the first use of these weapons, but one of the main advocates of the Lisbon Treaty, President Sarkozy, plans to integrate France into the Nato military structures and to consolidate EU/Nato military co-operation. The No vote to the Lisbon Treaty was a victory for sanity in a world dominated by neo-liberal militarists that will continue with an Obama victory unless the peace movements in the US and throughout the states of the EU and the rest of the world ensure Nato and a militarised EU are abolished, as was the Warsaw Pact. - Yours, etc,
ROGER COLE,
Chair, Peace and Neutrality Alliance,
Sandycove,
Dublin.
