Sir, - Muredach Doherty (August 26th) accuses the AA of using its Roadwatch service as a platform to air its views on transport policy, specifically with respect to the new Quality Bus Corridors in Dublin. This is not the case.
The AA has worked closely with RTE in the provision of the Roadwatch service for 10 years. In that time, both organisations have always resolutely ensured that the role of Roadwatch is straightforward and factual. The purpose of AA Roadwatch is to provide the travelling public with the best and most up to date travel information service possible. Research among the listening public has consistently shown that the service is very well respected and appreciated.
It is natural that a representative motoring organisation such as the AA should have built up a wealth of experience in transport matters in its long history. Statements or comments with respect to policy issues are handled by the AA's public affairs office and its spokesman Conor Faughnan, never by AA Roadwatch.
Our broadcasters are carefully instructed to avoid commenting on areas outside of the simply communication of travel news. An exception will occasionally be made to this rule, for example in order to broadcast road safety or Garda messages.
