Sir, - There is great anguish about war being waged during Ramadan, the Muslim period of prayer and fasting. There is a reasonable case to be made on this issue.
But we should remind ourselves that solicitude of this quality did not deter Egypt and Syria from starting the surprise war against Israel on Yom Kippur, the most solemn day in the Jewish religious calendar.
The attackers, with delicate timing, launched the assault knowing that most Israelis would be at service in the synagogues.
We should refrain from ripping too many garments on the matter of war and Ramadan. The entire media has forgotten, or ignored, the fact that there was a Yom Kippur War in 1973. - Yours, etc., Brian Quinn,
